Written for gayageum and percussion, Spinning in Circles musically depicts a series of concentric circles. After a quick opening, the two performers alternate playing various rhythmic and melodic patterns. These patterns repeat, each time becoming faster – like circles within circles. Eventually, both instruments join together and launch into a long crescendo that spirals out of control before settling into a familiar groove.
Spinning in Circles is written for Ji-young Yi and Gyubong Rhee.
Spinning in Circles은 연속되는 동심원*들을 가야금과 타악기로 표현한 작품이다. 곡이 휘몰아치듯 시작된 후, 두 명의 연주자가 다양한 리듬과 멜로디로 구성 된 패턴들을 주고받는다. 이 패턴들은 마치 원 안의 또 다른 원처럼 점점 빨라지며 반복되는데, 마침내 두 악기가 서로 만나 소용돌이가 몰아치듯 음악이 점점 고조에 달하여 이내 우리에게 익숙한 흥의 세계가 펼쳐진다. 이 곡은 오늘 저녁 이지영과 이규봉에 의해 초연되며, 두 연주자에게 이 작품을 바친다.
