Black Waves imagines the motions of the sea at night. Sometimes the surface gently undulates, and other times it churns dangerously. At all times, though, the music ripples and rocks.
The piece was commissioned by gayageum soloist Lee Jieun (이지언), and is dedicated to her intrepid spirit as a champion of contemporary music.
‘검은 파도’는 밤바다의 움직임을 상상하게 한다. 때로는 바다 표면이 부드럽게 일렁이기도 하고, 때로는 위험하게 요동치기도 한다. 하지만 언제나 음악은 물결치며 흔들린다. 이 작품은 가야금 연주가 이지언을 위해 위촉되었으며, 현대 음악의 선구자로서 그녀의 당찬 정신을 기리기 위해 헌정되었다.
