Abyss (심연)

2 25-string gayageums and geomungo
2025 (10′)

As I set about writing this piece, I imagined the experience of traveling to the deepest reaches of the ocean, falling through the depths for miles until eventually reaching a surreal underwater landscape. It would be a thrilling ride, sinking deeper and deeper until the sun no longer shines and the sea life becomes more and more alien, but I imagine it would also be one filled with fear. In the first half of Abyss, the music is constantly being pulled downward. Falling gestures permeate this part of the piece, as if each melody feels the tug of gravity. Somewhere around halfway through the journey, the music strives to rise back up, with gradually rising gestures moving towards some invisible surface. And once we arrive back where we began, gravity’s tug begins to take hold once more, always present and always dangerous.

Abyss was commissioned by the Asia Zither Musicians Association, and was premiered in the fall of 2025.
