The massive waves that crash against the shores of Hawaiʻi make for an incredible display, and witnessing these swells rolling in had me imagining their origins. Thousands of miles away, each was formed by some slight disturbance along the surface of the water, driven by wind and the tug of the moon until it
amassed incredible amounts of energy; a small disturbance becoming an immense force of nature.
This was the inspiration for The Distant, Deep Blue Sea. The music begins calmly and spaciously, with energy gradually emerging and building to a breaking point, after which all that remains is a gentle rocking and an echo of the waves’ song.
The piece is dedicated to the performers for whom it was written: Clara Kim, Iksoo Heo, and Angela Kim — each a force of nature in their own right.
