Islands is a setting of a text by W.S. Merwin (1927-2019), a poet who lived for many years on Maui. His evocative poem reads as a love letter to the Hawaiian Islands, and the music is meant for that same purpose. It was first performed by the University of Hawai’i Chamber Singers, directed by Rachel Samet, in spring 2008 in Honolulu.
