Dawn Chorus

shakuhachi, cello and electronics
(2025) 8′

Each of us has experienced it at some point: a lone bird singing in the moments before dawn, joined by another, and another, until hundreds of calls layer upon each other to create a complex, cacophonous counterpoint. This is the inspiration for Dawn Chorus, which begins spaciously with the shakuhachi and cello alternating their own calls. In time, the two performers find themselves echoed and accompanied by sounds all around them, building in intensity until they are nearly swallowed up by the dense, busy textures of the conclusion.

PERFORMANCE NOTE:

The piece utilizes electronics and requires amplification for the shakuhachi and cello, a laptop, and speakers.
