Over the course of the work, the two string instruments gradually shift from playing veiled, quiet music to soaring, expressive melodies. This is especially noticeable in the cello (with one string tuned down a half-step), which begins by playing only harmonics &#8211; soft, pure tones &#8211; and moves over time to playing normal tones in shimmering arpeggios.
