Much of the piece is based on Gregorian chant, specifically the &#8220;Rorate Caeli&#8221; chant. (The opening words of this chant translate to &#8220;Rain down, heavens, from above.&#8221;) The piece begins slowly with veiled references to the chant. Gradually, the texture becomes fuller and faster, and the chant itself becomes completely obscured in a torrent of activity.
