For many years I’ve wanted to write a piece incorporating the American Blues, but I hesitated because I hadn’t yet found an ensemble that could evoke the timbres and gestures that would best suit the genre. I was surprised, then, when I was introduced to gugak, Korean traditional music, since much of that music seemed to share the same sound world as the Blues. Won’t Do Wrong No More makes its Blues roots clear from the outset, with the piri imitating the sound of a blues singer’s raspy voice. As the piece goes, it moves in and out of blues landscapes, occasionally returning to the opening theme.
This piece is dedicated to Ji-young Yi, Chiwan Park and Woongsik Kim.
지난 몇 년간 아메리칸 블루스를 담은 작품을 쓰고 싶었으나, 블루스만의 특색, 즉 음색과 움직임을 잘 표현 할 수 있는 가장 적합한 앙상블을 찾기가 쉽지 않아 주저하고 있었다. 그러던 중 국악을 알게 되었고, 놀랍게도 국악과 블루스는 그 소리의 세계가 많은 부분 닮아 있었다. 곡의 시작부분, 피리가 블루스 가수의 거친 목소리를 흉내 낼 때, 이 곡 (Won’t do wrong no more) 이 블루스에 기반을 두고 있다는 것을 명확히 알게 될 것이다. 이 곡은 블루스의 경계를 넘나들면서 전개되고, 때때로 처음의 주제로 다시 돌아간다.
이 곡은 이지영, 박치완 그리고 김웅식에게 헌정한다.
