While this piece features two haegeums, their music is nearly identical. Both play the same melodies, but one follows the other like a shadow. In the opening, the second haegeum echoes the first at a distance, much as one's shadow follows in the early morning hours. As the piece goes, the shadow becomes closer and the tempo increases. Finally, just before the end and after a fast chase, the melody and its shadow are united in a short dance before moving apart once again.
Dancing With Shadows was written for The Society for Haegeum Research's 20th anniversary concert and is dedicated to that organization's members.
