Jeong Cheol (정철/鄭澈, 1536–1593), a poet and statesman, lived part of his life in exile, having taking up residence in Damyang in Jeolla Province after losing a political struggle. His writings, mostly in the traditional Korean forms of the gasa and sijo, often explore the emotions of one who has been expelled from his home and must deal with thoughts of isolation. In one such poem he uses the imagery of a crane which will one day soar above the clouds:
When my long feathers molt, I’ll flap my wings again and soar above the cloudy blue, where I’ll see a fresh, unimpeded world

This vivid symbolism serves as the inspiration for Bisang, which is translated as “soaring.” Beginning calmly, energy is gradually amassed until the music launches upwards. After fits of zigging and zagging, the mood eventually calms, with the piri and janggu weaving placid circular patterns together.
Bisang is dedicated to Chiwan Park, whose friendship and artistry I’ve come to treasure over the decade I have known him.
시인이자 정치인인 정철 (鄭澈, 1536‒1593)은 오랜 기간동안 감옥살이를 하고, 후에는 정쟁에서 벗어나 전라도의 담양에 자리를 잡았다. 그의 작품들은 대부분 한국의 전통 가사와 시조의 형태로 만들어졌는데, 몇몇 작품들은 고향으로부터 추방된 이의 고독함을 표현한다. 이 시에서 정철은 학이 구름 위를 나는 장면을 이용하여 그의 마음을 표현했다.

이 생생한 상징성은 나의 작품 “비상”의 영감의 밑거름이 되었다. 곡은 고요하게 시작하여 서서히 에너지가 축적되어 상승한다. 급격하게 에너지가 분출된 후에, 곡의 분위기는 피리와 장구의 잔잔한 순환 패턴에 의해 잦아든다.이 곡은 오랜 시간 귀중한 예술성과 우정을 보여주신 박치완 선생님께 헌정한다.
