Program Note

The title of "Chants of Rain" refers to the source material of the piece. Much of the piece is based on Gregorian chant, specifically the "Rorate Caeli" chant. (The opening words of this chant translate to "Rain down, heavens, from above.") The piece begins slowly with veiled references to the chant. Gradually, the texture becomes fuller and faster, and the chant itself becomes completely obscured in a torrent of activity. Only in the end does the source material reveal itself, fading off into the distance.

"Chants of Rain" is dedicated to Chiwan Park, a friend with an adventurous spirit who has established himself as a champion for new music for piri.
