I just received the Gimhae Municipal Gayageum Orchestra’s new CD “Tall Tree Forest,” a collection of mostly-new pieces for the large ensemble based in a smaller city in the southern part of South Korea. The group is currently directed by Seoul National University professor and gayageum soloist Ji-young Yi, who has continued the ensemble’s work in commissioning composers to write new works for the orchestra. 6 of those commissions are featured on this recording, including my own “Mass Migration.” I wasn’t involved in the recording itself, but I’m really pleased with the results. I’ve posted a sample below, and if you’re curious to learn more about the piece I wrote a previous entry on it here.
The other commissioned works on the CD are all by both well-known and up-and-coming Korean composers: Sin Chang-ryeol, An Hyeon-jeong, Ryu Hyeong-seon, Gang Bong-cheon, Hwag Ho-jun, and Baek Gyu-jin. Hopefully I can figure out how to get the CD online and I’ll post the info here soon.
